John W. Kuhl, Civil War Collector, Historian, Author

John W. Kuhl authored “Hunterdon County in the Civil War, The Times, The Men, Their Stories”. He is a longtime researcher on New Jersey’s participation in the Civil War, Three Bridges history, and Hunterdon family genealogy, and is a sought-after lecturer on those topics.An avid collector of New Jersey Civil War arms, accoutrements, images and mementos, John is a Trustee of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association. He is also a founding member and former commander of the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Association.A former associate editor of “Military Images” magazine, he authored, with Michael Gesner, a genealogical tome on the “Kuhl Family of Hunterdon County, New Jersey”. He is currently working with Dr. David Martin of Hightstown on a book of biographies of New Jersey Civil War generals, commodores and admirals.

The Astle-Alpaugh Family Foundation is committed to the preservation of our local and national heritage. The Foundation works closely with local citizens, historians, collectors, and museums to preserve their stories so that we can all make connections with our shared history.A current resident of Central New Jersey, Stephen M. Domovich, was born in Alexandria, Pennsylvania in 1924. After graduating high school on May 26, 1943, he was drafted into the Army and began boot camp on June 6. One year later Stephen found himself on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Stephen served in four campaigns before the war ended and he returned home.


J. Richard Pierce, Collector, U.S. Parade Flags

J. Richard Pierce is a historian and flag collector and the author of The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit (2005).

Richard participates in historical exhibits around the country, lending out many of his flags so that others may experience them. He is an active volunteer in his local New Jersey community, working closely with museums and historical societies as well as promoting and coordinating local exhibits.

Presented by The Astle-Alpaugh Family Foundation, this video is a discussion of parade flags and historical aspects of how our flag developed.
